Heritage Day is a South African public holiday celebrated on 24 September. On this day, South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people.

The Islamic Network group invited us (Persatuan Seni Silat Pukulan Melaka South Africa) to commemorate heritage day with them at the Cantray House in Constansia on wednesday 24th September 2014. A group of 7 pesilats (silat exponents) demonstrated a brief silat presentation to show the revival of the malay martial art heritage in Cape Town.

The event at the Cantray House included various cultural displays and also included the 'Face of Melayu Cape' female competition finals. They marketed the event on facebook with the following, "Come & see photo exhibitions, view the silat demonstration, experience the energy of a traditional Cape Ratiep, listen to stories of of our history & culture, come & see traditional dances, view an exclusive exhibition provided by the Indonesian Consulate & buy a traditional lunch to have on the lawn under our bedouin tent."  Meals on sale included deliscious traditional fried chicken and yellow rice, Bobotie, and fried chicken noodles.

South Africa is rich in cultural diversity, and the malays who were forcefully removed from their native lands i.e Indonesia etc, were either enslaved or exiled to the Cape by the Dutch colonialists in the 1600's. This however caused the spread of Islam at the Cape, because many of the Indonesian exiles were well schooled in the Islamic sciences, and the likes of Tuan Guru Imam Abdullah Bin Qadi Abdussalaam established the first Masjid and madrassah (islamic school) in 1792.

Although this Imam was well known for his knowledge of Islam (about 5 handwritten copies of the Quran exists which he wrote from memory), we could assume that the Imam also knew silat, the malay martial art. This is assumed because amongst the possessions of the Imam at the Cape, he owned a sword and shield from the Island of Tidore, Indonesia. Malays under Dutch colonial rule were not allowed to practice any form of martial art for obvious reasons. Thus, any silat knowledge amongst malays at the time would have been lost over time.

It is said that the Keris dagger/sword is the symbol of the malay people. Apart from it being a silat weapon, this sword is also used as a ceremonial weapon, at weddings where the malay bride and groom sometimes wear it as part of their attire. The keris of Shaykh Yusuf (another great Indonesian Shaykh buried in Macassar, Cape Town) is said to be kept in a museum in Netherlands.

South Africans celebrate Heritage Day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa. Various events are staged throughout the country to commemorate this day.

In 2005, a media campaign sought to "re-brand" the holiday as National Braai Day, in recognition of the South African culinary tradition of holding informal backyard barbecues, or braais.

On 5 September 2007, Archbishop Desmond Tutu celebrated his appointment as patron of South Africa's Braai (Barbecue) Day, affirming it to be a unifying force in a divided country (by donning an apron and tucking into a boerewors sausage). At the end of 2007 National Braai Day changed its name to Braai4Heritage and the initiative received the endorsement of South Africa's National Heritage Council (NHC).

Organiser Jan Scannell (known as "Jan Braai") announced that the aim is not to have a mass braai, but little ones with friends and family. Some have commented that this is a ploy to make people forget the history and the original meaning of why the day was created.

GAZA UNDER ATTACK! biggest march in South Africa planned

PERSATUAN SENI SILAT PUKULAN MELAKA SOUTH AFRICA cannot be silent in the face of oppression. We stand by the Quranic and Prophetic instruction to stop injustice and defend the oppressed.

Secondly, as sane human beings, we feel the pain of our brothers and sisters across the world who are faced with daily oppression from corrupt leadership.

As pesilats, we stand by our 4th plegde of our 5 Ikrar Pesilat (silat pledge) i.e; A Pesilat is a knight who upholds truth, honesty and justice, and is always resilient in facing any ordeal and temptation.

We will march and make our voices heard loud and clear to our government and to others that silence is not an option when we see babies and innocent civilians being killed by Israeli forces. We do not believe in a two state solution, because Israel has stolen the land and resources from Palestinians and it must be returned!

Picture
The National Coalition for Palestine are set to host a mass march towards Parliament on Saturday 9th August, calling for urgent government action against Israel’s nearly month long bombardment of the Gaza Strip. The march is being billed as the biggest such event in the country post-Apartheid, with organisers hoping to attract more than 100 000 pro-Palestinian supporters from across the country. The march also coincides with National Woman’s Day.

The coalition is fronted by a number of local civil society groups, including the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), ANC Youth League, Cosatu, and BDS South Africa. According to BDS coordinator, Muhammed Desai, the march would come on the back of 44 similar protest actions across the country since the beginning of the conflictand would look to pressurise the national government into taking concrete action against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

“We need to make it very clear to the South African government that the majority of South Africans from across the board, from the workers of Cosatu, to the churches and mosques, are calling on them to take a very clear stand on the Israeli attacks on Gaza,” he said.

The march has been billed as the largest to take place in the country since 1994, when former president Nelson Mandela was released from prison. That event attracted 90 000 people, and Desai noted they were looking to top that by mobilising more than 100 000 to attend Saturday’s event.

“We can only achieve that with the support of the community, so we are asking communities to call up your families in far flung towns and cities, and encourage them all to come through for this protest,” he said.

The main aim of the march is to send a message to the Israeli government that their actions in Gaza were unacceptable. He said they would call on national government to start off a diplomatic protest against Israel, by recalling the South African ambassador to Israel, as well as expelling the Israeli ambassador from the country. They would also call on government to implement a program of broad based boycotts against Israel.

“We are demanding that South Africa follows the lead of over 70 European Union countries, who have issued warnings to businesses, citizens, and other groups not to do trade with Israeli settlements, and not to have any sort of dealings with companies operating in the occupied Palestinian territories,” he said.

He also noted they would be putting pressure on government to act on the Gaza Docket, and hold those South Africans serving in the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) accountable for the merciless killings of innocent Palestinians.

Desai said they were expecting a number of top dignitaries to attend Saturday’s march. This included the children of a number of South African struggle veterans and political party representatives. He also noted a widespread support amongst local celebrities and musicians and were expecting a number of them to come out to the march.

He urged community members to show their solidarity for the Palestinian cause by coming out in their thousands and join the overwhelming number of protests taking place across the globe.

Saturday’s march will start off at Keizergracht at 11am, before proceeding to Parliament where a memorandum will likely be handed over to parliamentary representative. VOC (Mubeen Banderker)

Silat Minang Jamboree 2013 - Indonesia

5/23/2013

Picture
Silat warriors from 25 countries will display their ability in the Silat Minang International Jamboree event in Nagari Talang Babungo, Solok district from 20-26 August.

Head of Tourism of Solok, Jasman said to ranahberita.com on  Tuesday (05/14/2013) that the event was organized by the community observers and performers of  Silat Minang Talang Babungo. In the meanwhile, the government fully supports the event.

He explained that all participants would be camping in the open. " 25 countries has already provided confirmation.
Those from abroad prefers camping rather than to over-night in a hotel," said Jasman.

According to Jasman, the government essentially wanted the program to start 16 August. However, the foreign national participants has to adjust according to their work schedule. The event, he added, aims to restore the authenticity of Silat Minang. "Given the outstanding amount of Silat Minang practitioners abroad, from England, Germany, Panama and others, it necessitates introduction and explanation what   Silat Minang exactly is about, "said Jasman.

Jasman explains, many Silat Minang schools are established abroad. Sometimes, the teachers only study abroad for a while. "They only learn for  a year or two over here, thereafter they instantly become instructors.
In fact, Silat Minang is unique, as its correlation with Islam, " says Jasman.

In addition to foreign fighters, the Jambore will also be enlivened by the Minang fighters themselves from West Sumatra. Jasman said, there are approximately 500 silat  schools in West Sumatra. The committee will invite all the schools (branches) that exist. For the smooth flowing of  this event, the Solok region government had met some of the relevant ministries.
"We've got the full support of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Education and Culture," Jasman said.

"We from the government, are ready to assist in all aspects, such as asking for the support of the center and look for sponsors," said Jasman. (Raju Arafat | Yose)

Picture
Indonesia was elected as the host of the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games. Currently, Riau slightly move on to speed up the process of venues preparation. This will be the biggest event after previous national sports event (PON XVII).One of the winning election factors of Riau as the host city is its location, which is close to Singapore and Malaysia. It makes Riau as a strategic location for attended countries for the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games. Riau has strong Islamic culture and tradition.

Preparation for the international sports event that will be attended by 57 Islamic countries from all over the world will be more easy because it will use venues that been used for the national sports event. The quality of venues will be increased to international venues standard.

The delegation of ISSF with the Indonesia Olympic Committee (KOI) already visited venues on July 2011. In the Consolidation Meeting of ISSF ~ Inspection and Coordination Committee of the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games, ISSF said that they were satisfied with Riau's effort to develop and prepare the venues.

Mohamed Shaled Gadzar, the secretary general of ISSF, said that swimming venues must be adjusted to international standard. But, he's very sure that Riau will be able to adjust the venues soon. 'Riau is appropriated to be the host of ISG. Supported by international infrastructure scale, Riau will be a successful host of ISG, because all of the venues concentrated into one area,' said Gadzar. He's seems to be satisfied and optimistic that the development stages will be finished on schedule.

There will be 18 sports to compete, like Aquatic (swimming, diving, water polo), gymnastic, athletic, football, taekwondo, volleyball, weightlifting, karate, badminton, pencaksilat, archery, shooting, wrestling, basketball, handball, tennis, table tennis, fencing, and cycling. Sepaktakraw will be exhibited in this event. But, still no warm-up venues seen yet.

'The venues are almost ready to use. The venues look good, but we will have to keep in mind that we do not yet know the number of teams and sports that will attend. Standard medical facilities near the athletes village and the venues will be needed,' said Abdul Khaliq Khan from ISSF.

'We will further cooperate to make our dream come true and make Islam stronger. After this we hope that this event will increase solidarity and understanding between all of us. Actually, I am expecting our guests to stay longer and witness the closing ceremony,' said Rusli Zainal, the Governor of Riau in ICCM Meeting. 'We will prepare it better. And we will work on it and discuss it with the people from Jakarta.'

Swimming the hard way in Japan: in samurai armour

10/21/2012

Picture
YOKOHAMA, Oct 7 — Walking or running in a full suit of samurai armour is not the easiest thing in the world. Swimming in it is even harder, but that's exactly what some in Japan are doing. For fun.

“It's heavy, and it's hot in here ... Fan me hard,” Mutsuo Koga, a 27-year-old doctor, told fellow disciples of traditional Japanese swimming at a recent meet.

“I'm worried about whether I'll be able to get myself back out of the water. It's been three years since I last swam,” said Koga as he readied to take the plunge in a public swimming pool.

Traditional swimming was developed during Japan's feudal 15th and 16th Centuries, when feared samurai swordsmen roamed the country enforcing their masters' will.

Part survival technique – there were times when a warrior just had to swim for it, boots and all – and part aesthetic performance, traditional swimming now has its place in the pantheon of Japanese martial arts.

And like all martial arts, its adherents say it has real-life applications.

“The primary purpose of this kind of swimming is to acquire practical skills for swimming in a real environment,” said Tadao Koga, Mutsuo's father and the grand master of the Kobori school, one of twelve recognised by the Japan Swimming Federation.

“If you can swim fast using Western strokes, that doesn't mean you can survive in a natural environment,” said Koga, 67.

Traditional swimmers have to master a kind of treading water, which will allow them to withstand powerful waves near a seashore.

They also have to learn the “hayanuki” stroke, vital for swimming against a current or up a river, thrusting your body high into the air as your arms crash into the foam.

Whatever happens, you have to keep your head above the water and your wits about you – that obstacle looming in front of you could be a rock, or it could be an axe-wielding enemy.

Oh, and you have to do it while wearing 15 kilograms of armour.

The appeal of the sport is that “swimmers compete on form and beauty, rather than the speed of swimming,” said Yoko Suzuki, 25, a champion of women's traditional swimming.

Masahiko Yaginuma, chairman of the Japanese Traditional Swimming Committee of the JSF, said the form was widely taught in schools in the early 20th century but fell out of favour and is now only found in a few institutions.

“Nowadays women in their 60s or older are the main group of new learners,” because they see traditional swimming as an extension of the other noble arts a cultured Japanese woman learns – like flower arranging and tea ceremony, he said.

Briton Antony Cundy, a Tokyo-based advertising executive who has spent years being tutored in the Kobori school of swimming, said there were real benefits to taking up the sport.

“It's a fun way of getting fit and enjoying Japanese culture and history,” said Cundy.

“It's astonishing you don't see many foreigners enjoying it.”

Around a minute after he slid heavily into the water, Mutsuo Koga slowly and unsteadily hauled himself out to roaring applause from the assembled crowd.

He had managed about 20 metres using a stroke designed to make him glide across the surface of the water, his helmeted head making no abrupt moves.

“Your chest was supposed to be above the water,” Tadao chastised, as his son stood panting on the poolside.

“I was not very good,” gasped Mutsuo. “My body didn't float at all.” — AFP-Relaxnews
