KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- About 600 local and international silat exponents from Higher Learning Institutions in the country are expected to participate in the Deputy Prime Minister's Trophy International Pencak Silat Championships in Batu Pahat, Johor from Sept 17 to 22.
The annual championship to be held at Square One Batu Pahat shopping complex is being organised by the Higher Learning Ministry (HLM) and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UHTM) with sanction from the National Silat Federation (Pesaka). UHTM vice-chancellor Prof Amir Hashim Mohd Kassim said the third edition championship this year would include programmes like visits to traditional Malay silat villages around Batu Pahat and silat museum, two or three days before the competition.
"The visits will give silat exponents, especially those from abroad, a chance to learn more about local silat practitioners," he told reporters here. He said nine countries would challenge overall defending champion, Malaysia, including Netherlands, Belgium, Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom and Vietnam. -- BERNAMA
